The Daily Thistle â News From Scotland
Wednesday 25th April 2018
"Madainn Mhathâ âŠFellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to youâŠ.  Sorry, for my vent on Brexit yesterday, but, a vent is as good as a stiff drink, and as I donât drink, Vent it was⊠Well the weather is somewhat overcast this Tuesday morning, with a warning from the weather people of a âTormentâ on Wednesday and Thursday, thatâs a storm, but with the strong night time winds we have been experiencing, that will be downgraded to showers before todayâs over. Well I am sure the news today, will bring a smile and maybe a frown as you think them through⊠Enjoy your day!
DRILLING SHIP CALLED TO HELP SEARCH FOR SCOTS BOYSâ PIRATE SHIPâŠ. An offshore drilling ship has been called in to help the search for a toy pirate ship on an ambitious 3,000-mile-journey across the Atlantic Ocean. The boat, named âAdventureâ, is owned by Aberdeenshire brothers Ollie Ferguson, eight, and Harry, five and was launched off the coast of Mauritania in November. The brothers from Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, had hoped the boat would reach America. But it is starting to run low on battery and itâs feared the little boatâs tracker will fail, meaning the boys will never know if it has reached its planned destination. The kind-hearted crew from the 228m long Stena Carron have now offered to help find the boat if it comes close to their position. The crew says they will recharge its batteries and send it back on its way to American soil if they find it. The vessel was launched as part of a âsandbucket listâ of 500 adventures set up by the boyâs father MacNeill Ferguson. The familyâs adventures are being chronicled on their Facebook page âThe Days are Just Packedâ. So far the boat has braved the rough seas and strong currents across 2,000 miles of the southern Atlantic. The pirate ship, which can be tracked online, is now around 100 miles off the coast of Guyana and around 35 miles from Stena Carron, a ship owned by Aberdeen-based Stena Drilling. The family remains positive about the venture, despite a recent change of course which means the Stena Carron may be unable to save it. Dad McNeill said: âWe have been watching her make her way across, facing waves about 20 metres high. âItâs amazing that she has made it all the way across to Guyana. âThere were problems with last week when she didnât ping and we were contacted by people on Stena Carron and I ended up speaking to the offshore installation manager who said if its comes near to them they would pick her up for us. âThey had all 160 crew looking out for it. They were all on this rescue mission for our little boysâ boat. âI think she came about 35 miles away from the Stena Carron. âIt was too much to ask them to go all that way from the rig, but they told us to keeping sending co-ordinates and they are going to keep on looking out for it.â Adventure is currently on course to land somewhere in the Caribbean - but without the tracker, its landfall may remain a mystery. If it is returned home, the ambitious boys plan to set it off again, this time across the Pacific. Adventureâs progress can be tracked via its dedicated website at: track-adventure.squarespace.com
DRINKING GIN AND TONIC COULD HELP REDUCE HAY FEVER SYMPTOMSâŠ. The (much-welcomed) news comes as hay fever season creeps up on us, with pollen count rising during the spring and summer months, particularly between mid-May and June. And if youâre one of the millions of people in the UK who suffer from the dreaded watery eyes, itchy throat and constant sneezing, you might be able to ease youâre symptoms with a refreshing G&T. Research conducted by Asthma UK suggests consuming clear spirits such as gin or vodka can reduce the symptoms of hay fever. According to Asthma UK, 75 per cent of sufferers claim certain types of alcohol can trigger their allergies, which is due to histamine and sulphites typically found in darker, fermented drinks such as beer and red wine. However, clear spirits such as vodka and gin have a low histamine content, which is especially good for people who are prone to allergies. So, while itâs important to remember that gin wonât completely cure your runny nose or water eyes, it might still be worth switching your pint for a G&T the next time youâre at a barbecue.
PETA ASK COUNCIL FOR PERMISSION TO PLACE PLAQUE âIN MEMORY OF COWSâ AT SLAUGHTERHOUSE SITEâŠ. PETA have asked Edinburgh Council for permission to place a commemorative plaque on newly discovered 19th century slaughterhouse site Following the discovery of a 19th century slaughterhouse in Edinburgh, PETA sent a letter to Edinburgh Council Leader Adam McVey for approval of a permanent commemorative plaque in memory of the cows who suffered there to be placed at the site. According to plans from PETA, the plaque would read, âIn Memory of all the Cows Who Suffered and Died in an Abattoir on This Very Spot: Try Vegan.â In the letter, PETA points out that the memorial would be especially fitting for Edinburgh, which has been recognised as the UKâs Most Vegan-Friendly City because of its numerous vegan-friendly restaurants. âPETAâs plaque would memorialise the animals who died years ago at the site on Kingâs Stables Road and remind passers-by that killing animals for their flesh is a practice that belongs firmly in the past,â says PETA Director Elisa Allen. âEdinburghâs restaurants offer everything from vegan haggis to veggie burgers, so thereâs no better place in Scotland to give vegan eating a try.â PETA â whose motto reads, in part, that âanimals are not ours to eatâ â notes that vegan eating spares sensitive animals a terrifying death in todayâs abattoirs, where workers shoot cows in the head with a captive-bolt gun, hang them up by one leg, and cut their throats.
CLUBBERS IN âJOCKSTRAPSâ AND âHARNESSESâ FORCED TO EVACUATE NIGHTCLUBâŠ. The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning. A fire alarm at a popular nightclub saw clubbers dressed in âjockstrapsâ and âharnessesâ forced to evacuate onto an Edinburgh street on Saturday night. LGBT+ nightclub GHQ was hosting male only club night Dilf when a small fire set off the alarm, forcing staff to clear the crowds from the building while the fire service was called. Following the event, Twitter user @edinkink92, who was wearing a footie kit, said that some of the men in jockstraps were outside for âabout an hourâ, he tweeted: âFire alarm at dilf and all of the kinky folk in Edinburgh are standing in the street in jocks, harnesses, rubber and footie kitâ According to the Sun, Manager Taylor Crockett later confirmed on Facebook that âa small fireâ had broken out in the clubâs upstairs toilet, triggering the alarm. Crockett added that their floor manager was able to contain the small blaze using their extinguisher systems and thanked the fire department for their âquick responseâ.
BATHROOM HAND DRYERS COULD BE SPREADING FAECES, STUDY FINDSâŠ. The handryers we use in the bathroom might be spreading bacteria. Hand dryers in bathrooms could be covering our hands in germs and faecal matter, a new study has suggested. A study by the University of Connecticut sought to discover if hand dryers were helping to disperse germs, or were in fact simply redistributing them. The paper found that dryers actually spread germs. Flushing the toilet with the lid open can send faecal particles into the air, where they can linger until the hand dryer is switched on, with the particles heated up in the machine and spat back into the userâs hands. The hands being wet is a particularly healthy environment for gems to thrive in. âThese results indicate that many kinds of bacteria, including potential pathogens and spores, can be deposited on hands exposed to bathroom hand dryers and that spores could be dispersed throughout buildings and deposited on hands by hand dryers,â the study concluded. Researchers suggest fitting dryers with HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters, which can reduce the bacterial deposition by four times. Alternatively paper towels are found to be more hygienic, but that option is also less environmentally friendly and potentially more costly. The consequence of hand dryers spreading faecal matter is unlikely to have a serious effect on your health, however, as many day-to-day items, such as mugs and desks, are also covered in germs.
On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,
Our look at Scotland today is of the âAdventureâ, which is owned by Aberdeenshire brothers Ollie Ferguson, eight, and Harry, five.
